The Complex Dichotomy of A Post-Racial America
In the last two weeks America has seen two very different types of residual "racialized" situations take place, however, one has been publicly met by deep community outcry by affecting primarily a few elite millionaire athletes as being utterly racist while the other one which has been acquired through legislation by numerous state policies throughout the nation and will effect the nations college entrance of most minority college applicants has been overlooked. Even though this approved policy affects race , it is not being perceived as racist. The noxious venom spewed forth from L.A. Clippers billionaire owner Donald Sterling were vehemently revealed and resisted as the NBA commissioner censored him for life. His players threw their warm up suits on the floor in silent protest and he was ostracized by all associated as a fan or professionally in the arena of sports and the nation in general. The press had a field day on the scandal. But, the week before that how many news outlets locally or nationally on a repetitive basis continued the message that the ban on Affirmative Action as a policy has been upheld . Now it can be utilized by any or virtually all states as state law. Michigan resumed its fight for this and which was already upheld during the Clinton Era which gave Texas and California ( the most liberal state in the union. How ironic in the light the L.A. Clippers incident is taking place there.)to follow in suit. But , oddly enough we didn't see the outpouring or outcry from the news media, civil rights leaders in the SCLC, Urban League, NAACP or NAACP Legal Fund,ACLU,Department of Education or anyone else described as a civil rights leader for that matter. It is a new day. In an era of modern digital technology , where African-American 12th grade students(particularly males) can not read at 5th or 6th grade levels proficiently and in city's such as Atlanta where the public school teachers are erasing wrong answers on standardized tests to help inner city students cheat instead of achieve, progress, and graduate are caught. But, it's not all minorities or people of color who will be effected by these new bans on Affirmative Action particularly as it relates to race. The Asian-American students have excelled beyond all students . What mainstream politicians, particularly ultra-conservatives might read into these results is that we are now in an era where "the content of one's character(aptitude) and not the content of one's color has to now be taken literally. Liberals may feel that a backlash is happening, and that the words of Dr. Martin Luther King will be used against the legacy of a new generation that will not have any leg up in this competitive academic and global economic market. If misogynistic lyrics and wearing one's pants down to the knees are the greatest perceived problem that minorities think that they have, they had better think and look again. In the end it will all be seen as a class conflict affecting the lower socio-economic strata more by keeping most of them uneducated to participate and compete effectively in the future.
