Planetary "Illness" : Diagnosis "Critical"
In the past many of us have compartmentalized health from politics, the economy, and the planetary situation of the environment seeing them as completely separate situations not directly related. But, recent circumstances such as the use of depleted uranium , Fukushima's disaster, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the BP oil spill, numerous forest fires in the U.S.A and Amazon, glacial ice melting, unpredictable snow storms, and the frequency and massively sized tropical storm cells all have had immense effects not only on the planet , but directly effects on the health of its inhabitants. The human organism is merely a microcosm of our planetary condition. We can not separate the health of the planet from that of each individual on the planet. The massively enormous planetary ills knows no borders when global disaster occurs.
THE PLANETARY BIOSPHERE:
The earth is an internal ecological system containing both living organisms and inanimate objects to assist maintaining life. The planet sustains all living organisms by providing hydration, energy and healing products(plant, herbs, minerals) to help us exist. Although the Eco-system makes human beings the superior life form because of our intelligence, how well the humans have currently maintained the planet is questionable? How many more nuclear insults can our home planet sustain ? How many more chemical spills can the human organism survive? Because of our position in the "food chain" human beings have a moral obligation to keep a harmonious balance on the planet and we have an obligation also to the next generation if the human species is to survive.
Are we willing to destroy our planet for the closed minded false 'belief" that the human biological organism is a protected entity that doesn't absorb these massive insults cumulatively over time ? Hiding our past or current self-destructive planetary behavior doesn't change the fact that nuclear material from Fukushima, Japan has already hit the shores of the Pacific coast threatening a rise in various cancers all along coastal Japan to Alaska, Canada and the continental USA. The clean up from BP's oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is still not completely over. But, the effects it has had on bizarre symptoms by tourists, residents and clean up crews alike have been well documented. Let's not forget the impact on the sea life. We've seen unexplainable migrations of infected dolphins, confused sharks and birds , we've also seen how Vietnamese catfish and Carp are overpopulating the Mississippi River and exotic reptiles in the Everglades are changing the balance in the ecosystem's sustainability.
As we slowly phase out naturally grown agricultural products, both animal and vegetative, with genetically modified seeds; science doesn't completely know or understand the long term effects on the human organism nor the wider economic and sociological impacts it is having on local farmers to be able to plant and store their own seed and to feed their families. We never could have imagined the impact it has on destroying local markets leading to the numerous suicides it is causing throughout the world.
The long term effects of over 300-400 tons of water containing nuclear material from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant or depleted uranium in the middle east will take thousands of years alone to subside. Let's not forget that the half-life of radiation still has on the Chernobyl "glow" . Radiation doesn't change it's course in the wind or oceans only stops at certain borders. All lungs will breath in these conditions.
How many more years will it take for the hundreds of square miles of the ocean floor effected from petroleum at the very bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to disperse and dissipate ? What long term effects will this have on both the human and marine population in the future?
As more ills effect the biosphere , science continues to come up with more(inorganic by-products) chemicals poised as cures that have intense side-effects that can have both immediate and long term impacts as well even though the planet has provided means to heal.
We can continue to name a list of literally thousands of planetary ills or disasters , but what are the solutions and resolutions to enact so as to reduce this apparent snow balling trend from accelerating out of control ? As the demographics and the number of the population rises and shifts , we have to look towards practical and reasonable humanistic policies that has its basis in science and humanity. Does this mean because of this we should look at the most sophisticated form of technology for more biological assistance? In time as the micro-chip, DNA manipulation , GMO foods become more important or even necessary for immediate solutions does it mean they are realistic or ethical-humanistic answers or does it mean the opposite that a method of "going back to nature" is our only assurance of human survivability. Perhaps there is a third choice, that of humankind's worth and value towards remaining a species amongst those others that do not abuse resources on earth. Perhaps we too, can learn from the lower phyla whom we "evolved" from.
We can not rationalize what we are doing any further with these "accidents",or with use of numerous conflicts with weapons of mass destruction, nor with our effects on climatic conditions .But, at the same time there are no quick patch work answers. Whatever it is , it must be done with reasonable intentions , well thought out and with the wisdom of philosophers .
The Atlantic Report will analyze and research all of these scenarios as realistic and potential possibilities from the view point of how these issues impact human health and the health of the planet itself.
